Clicking for BloggerAid!

We celebrated Kaaradiya Nombu with great aplomb. Suganya's spoken about the festival here beautifully. This was a very important festival for my mom and she did keep a 'vrath' and all that for my dad. Very obviously, I did not do all that, and made sure A helped me with this. I also tied the sacred strand/thread. See? I like the pic, so putting it up ;)

I was waiting for this festival to eat the Nombu Adais slathered with butter and, A and I were waiting for the festival to use our new bamboo steamer. Ya, this time around (our first, actually) we used bamboo steamers to steam our Nombu Adais. Traditionally, an Idli cooker/utensil is used. However, with great forethought (the Idli gadget is way too much stuff to clean up :D) ,we decided to use our newly acquired bamboo steamer.

We are not posting the recipe right now since we are sending this to BloggerAid for the BloggerAid cookbook aimed at creating great school meals as part of the World Food Program, a UN agency. This event requires us to send in our recipe through email to them, while not posting it on the blog. We hope that we've done our small bit towards alleviating hunger in the world.

Since this is a bamboo steamer and its wood and all that, this pic also goes to Jugalbandi's CLICK- Wood event! Yay! :D

I love the sweet adais very much. Being telugu people we don't celebrate it, but since we lived in Chennai we made these adais quite so often. My grandmother used to prepare it for me.

in response to your comment, if you put the squash "fries" on a baking sheet with a healthy drizzle of olive oil and roast them at about 350, they get nice and crispy after a while. you can take them out when they're just soft enough to eat, or leave them to crisp up for a while. it's just like roasting potatoes. good luck!

Suganya said...

I have read somewhere that cleaning a bamboo steamer after a while becomes a hassle. Is that so?

And, thanks for the mention. Charadu looks lovely on you :)

A_and_N said...

Thanks everyone :)

@Vibaas: Oh, we celebrated it in time. Just timed the blog post for today :D

@ Rajee: It essentially works as a steamer, Rajee. So kozhakattais will be great, am sure!

@Suganya: Thanks for visiting and the compliments :) A bamboo steamer is tough to clean if you leave it for later. We, almost immediately wiped it with a wet cloth/tissue, and let it dry. I've heard that you can even do a quick wash and make sure it dries really well.

Hannah said...

Oh, lovely! This makes me wish I had a real steamer... I just stick a wire rack inside a big pot of water when I need to steam things. Yours is so much more elegant!

Sakshi said...

So we get the recipe now or still have to get our hands on that book? :( I haven't had Adai's like for a century now....sobs
