(Vegetarian) Chocolate Pudding...Project Ramekin.

I love chocolate. I could do anything for chocolate. Almost. Just not kill the baker. I was on a no-carb, no-sugar diet all of last week. It was a great detox for me and my totally addicted to baked goods body. But then, A being the cruel husband that he is, continued to experiment. Every single night of the week, he baked something. Cheesecake, coffee cake, chocolate something-else and mango pudding, mango loaf... one of the things he baked was this chocolate pudding. And the most torturous thing was that I had to take all the pictures! I've decided that if I lose weight, I shall be given a bravery award!

He used a tart pan instead of a ramekin and tried agar-agar instead of gelatin. Being vegetarians and careful ones at that, we are very reluctant or rather will never use gelatin. You can imagine my agony every time I see a panna cotta or any other dish with ingredient. So, being very sweet, A decided to use Agar-Agar during the week I was on the diet. So sweet no? I'm so lucky no? Say it, say it. Come on! Uff!

Here is the recipe for all you bored folks waiting for me to finish my rant. I do not know how it tasted and I'm quite proud to say that. A loved it and ate the whole thing and baked this again the other night!

Ingredients:

1/4 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
1/4 cup milk
1/8 cup sugar
2 tsp strong freshly brewed coffee, room temperature
1 /2 tbsp agar agar powder

1. Pour the milk into a saucepan and bring it a medium heat.

2. Add the agar agar powder and stir well. Add the chocolate chips and sugar and heat until the chocolate chips have melted. Add the coffee. Make sure that the liquid is free of lumps so keep stirring every now and then.

3. Continue heating till you barely observe bubbling. Turn the stove off and pour this hot liquid into a greased tart pan/ramekin. It should fill it up.

4. Bring it to room temperature. This should set the pudding mostly. Place it in the refrigerator for a couple of hours to set it fully.

Dig in! Trust me, you won't be able to tell the difference between and the store brought Jello...it was THAT good :) Silky smooth texture, melt in the mouth chocolatey goodness...'nuff said!

We are sending this to Poornima's event, ' For the Love of Chocolate.' We love it as much as you do! :)

am impressed... seriously! don't you have a cheat day - where you can eat all you want? I have weekends as my cheat days :)... if I had someone to bake like this in my house, every day would be cheat day :) (As I typed this, it reminded of this line from FRIENDS - Every day is Lesbian Lovers Day)... the pudding looks awesome... and its so easy to make.. will have to try :)

Coffee & choc. are a lovely combination. I am yet to use agar agar.. just used a pack of vegetable jelly (Veg Gum), which set really well but unfortunately did not get an unflavored one.. kind of ruined the flavor of the recipe.

Home mades are ALWAYS good!! looks fantastic.

This is so not fair! First the cheesecake and now chocolate. I might resist the cheesecake but can never say no to chocolate. Now I have to find some to take my mind off this.:)

Dieting is hard enough as is and with a husband cooking up such delicious desserts each day - it must be really tough to resist them. I second you for that bravery award - you deserve it.
I've been looking for agar-agar too but didn't find it. Want to try pannacotta when i find it. Did you get it in normal grocery stores?

Dang, I accidently x'ed out before I could type in the code. If you get this comment as a repeat, you know why lol

Anyhoo, that chocolate pudding looks like a slice of chocolate creme brulee! Decadent! No doubt it's quite hard to diet with desserts like this in your face!

On a Yankee note, Girardi totally overmanaged. Either bring in Mo for 4 outs, or stick with a reliever who's getting the job done! The more pitchers you use, the more of a chance that at least one will be off that day! You do NOT mess around in a one run game!

Regarding the gelatin in the curd 'issue', several pastry chef pals warned me that pure pomegranate juice curd wouldn't set up like citrus curds using only eggs and/or egg yolks and butter, without some kind of stabilizer. The addition of citrus juice would help, but since I only had one shot to make this happen, I erred on the side of caution and used the small amount of gelatin, which had no effect on the texture and silkiness of the curd :)

Since the day I accidentally stepped into a food blog am thanking my stars and not missing a husband who cooks for me...instead I get to torture my husband with all my experiments and somehow I get this weird feeling he is enjoying it for a change.

U keep all these chocolate recipes coming ok...I have no probs with indulging in them even though my husband keeps warning me that maybe at a certain age I might start showing signs of getting a little flesh on myself...who cares when it will come to that I will start jogging with a bar of chocolate..You really didn't eat even a bite off that delicious thing?? my my some will power you have..will be back on ur blog

That is cruel indeed to continue to have baked goods, chocolate and this delicious pudding in the house when you are avoiding eating them. Good on YOU!
It really does look like an awesome dessert...and who can hate chocolate?

Hannah said...

This looks incredible, and I'm so excited that it could be made vegan by just using soymilk, too! Thanks for the recipe. :)

I haven't tried using agar agar. I tend to avoid anything that requires gelatine. I must get over that and give it a go!

Vibaas said...

that looks sooo yummy. oh i know how u feel. my hubby does the same to me...he just won't let me diet peacefully :D Men!!

All I can say now is how much I wish India sold most of the things on your ingrediants'list in the last 2 recipies of this blog.

I think I wet the floor drooling over the last one, but I just wish we get everything there.
I will try when I get Home :)

The pudding looks perfect and the texture is unbelievable. I'm yet to experiment with agar. Tried it for the first time recently but did not get expected result.

Pooh said...

A straightforward recipe, I like it! Is the hubster a regular baker or has the mood taken over recently? I'm thinking of making your recipe with a little less agar and whipping it into a mousse. Will let you know how it turns out!

A_and_N said...

Everyone: Thanks a ton. I know I'm strong and all that ;)

Asha: No holiday, nthing :(

Pooja: I love mousse. Let me know.

Lisa: A shall answer you :)
